What Is GLEIF? The Foundation Behind Every LEI
Behind every LEI code stands a single global body: GLEIF, the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation. If the LEI is the identifier, GLEIF is the organisation that makes sure it means the same thing everywhere in the world.
What GLEIF is
GLEIF is a not-for-profit organisation, headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, established in 2014 by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) at the request of the G20. It was created after the 2008 financial crisis, when regulators found there was no consistent way to identify the parties to financial transactions across borders. GLEIF is overseen by the Regulatory Oversight Committee (ROC), a group of public authorities that keeps the system anchored in the public interest.
What GLEIF actually does
GLEIF does not issue LEIs itself. Instead it governs the system end to end:
- it accredits and supervises the LOUs that issue LEIs;
- it sets the data and operational standards every issuer must follow;
- it publishes the Global LEI Index — the single, public database of every LEI ever issued, updated daily;
- it monitors data quality across the whole system;
- it is developing the vLEI, the verifiable digital version of the LEI.
Why it matters to you
Because GLEIF sits above all issuers, an LEI is an LEI no matter who you obtained it through — the validity and data standard are identical. What differs between providers is service and speed, not the legitimacy of the code.
