How to Renew an LEI

An LEI is not a one-time registration — it carries an annual obligation. Every year the reference data behind it must be re-confirmed and the LEI renewed.

Why renewal is required

Renewal keeps the public data about your entity current. If the deadline is missed, the LEI status changes from "Issued" to "Lapsed." A lapsed LEI still exists, but it signals that the data may be out of date, and in practice it can be rejected by trading systems. (See What happens when an LEI lapses?)

How to renew

You can renew through the same Registration Agent or LOU that maintains your code. The agent confirms that your data is still correct and renews the LEI for another period.

To avoid the risk of missing a deadline, many choose multi-year registration or managed renewals with reminders. (See Multi-year LEI registration.)
